The Ronn Motors Scorpion in the Show Room

The Ronn Motor Co. Scorpion, is a hydrogen assisted supercar with 450 hp, 0 to 60 times of 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph. This two-seater swoopy shape gets 40 mpg by adding a small amount of hydrogen to the intake air/fuel mixture, that allows the engine to operate with less fossil fuel. Here's a video of the car and Ron Maxwell, the CEO, talking about it.

The Scorpion produces hydrogen on board and injects it into the fuel stream to get the benefits of increased fuel economy and reduced emissions without having to add anything at non-existent hydrogen refueling stations. Ronn Motors claims a boost in mileage of 20 to 30% and a substantial drop in C02 and NOx output.

At both the business end and the consumer end, the green products we need have got to yield the type of benefits we’re used to, in order to succeed significantly. Clean energy has got to make some money for the business investors and managers taking the lead, and consumer products have to offer more than the warm fuzzies that come from knowing your “doing the right thing”. The sacrifices some are already making without these perks or considerations have been incredibly important for the awareness and momentum of global issues, but if our resource management is to ever make a societal sweep and change our direction, it needs to address the capitalism and carnality in our DNA. Ya know… “teaching abstinence” is ok if you believe in it, but pretending it’s transformative is being in denial.

Remember the RMC Scorpion Concept from a few months ago? It’s no longer a concept.

A working model of this hydrogen hybrid supercar debuted at SEMA last week, and it’s breathtaking in person. This curvaceous beauty was covered in a red/orange pearlescent paint sitting below a large tent which made it nearly impossible to get a good picture.

Adrian Pylypec, VP of Sales & Marketing for Ronn Motor Company (RMC) assured me that this Scorpion is a running version, and seemed very proud that RMC broke the typical concept car mold in that their concept car IS the production car. No extreme design concepts, then taming back the production version.

Recent research indicates that the market for luxury cars will continue to find strong support. The latest edition of the joint World Wealth Report by Merrill Lynch and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young says the number of “high-net-worth individuals” grew by 2.9% last year to almost 7.2 million. This is precisely the demographic that Ronn Motor Co. appeals to, with its unique combination of products and services. As an indication of the positive nature of the current market outlook, automakers are investing for segment growth from 33,000 units globally to more than 55,000 over a five-year period, and according to the latest study conducted by the German Institute for Automotive Business at Nurtingen College, the global demand for luxury cars will increase by about 20% by 2008. Sports car manufacturers who produce Ultra-Luxury/Prestige Sports Coupes such as Porsche, Ferrari and Jaguar have posted record sales in the past few years and industry analysts predict market growth to almost double over the next five years.

You may not have heard of the Ronn Motor Company (or RMC), but given that it's based in Austin, Texas, and existed for less than a year, that's understandable. But after this year's SEMA show the name might get more familiar. Ronn is using the annual aftermarket extravaganza to debut the first in a line of "premium, eco-friendly, handcrafted automobiles," an exotic called the Scorpion with a unique hydrogen powertrain that offers low emissions and impressive fuel economy without sacrificing supercar levels of performance. At least, that's what Ronn says.

Ronn Motors' Scorpion using Hydrogen Booster Print E-mail

The sexy $150,000 Scorpion sports car by Ronn Motors is making energy history by implementing hydrogen boost technology as part of the factory design, due out at the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009.

Until Scorpion, the hydrogen boost approach has been largely a movement of garage tinkerers and do-it-yourselfers, who have built a near infinite variety of on-board electrolysis units which duct the hydroxy (HHO) gas into the air intake, catalyzing a more efficient burn of the fuel. This improves fuel economy at least by 20%, and according to some internet gossip, can produce a near doubling of the mileage. There are also a few commercial operations producing and selling various hydrogen boost devices for retrofitting existing vehicles.
